The major in environmental policy and planning concentrates on the social science and policy dimensions of environmental problems, which often are caused by people and may have significant economic effects. Environmental issues are embedded in a complex mesh of economics, politics, culture, and behavior. Planners and policy makers must understand the human dimensions of these factors in order to solve environmental problems. The environmental policy and planning major is interdisciplinary; it draws courses from geographical and sustainability sciences, anthropology, economics, political science, and other disciplines.

- Complete the fourth level of a single world language as needed for Iowa's General Education Program.
- Complete if available:
ECON:1100 Microeconomics
STAT:1020 Elementary Statistics and Inference or STAT:1030 Statistics for Business for the BA Degree EES:1080 Introduction to Environmental Science - Complete all requirements for the AA degree.
- When transferring to Iowa, present a cumulative transfer grade-point average (GPA) of at least 2.00 from all colleges attended.
- During the first semester at Iowa, the student and faculty advisor should agree upon a plan of study and focus area for completing the major requirements.
- Complete the UI courses required for this major, as specified in the UI General Catalog.
- Complete at least half the remaining semester hours needed for your major and degree during each of your two years at Iowa. (BA degree 40-43 sh. BS degree 47-49 with advanced statistics courses).
